About Me . . .
Hi, I'm Shannon, and I'd like to welcome you to
Yavapai College. You will find that I am
passionate about learning and will be tireless in my enthusiasm and dedication
in your course. I believe instructors have an obligation not only to set the
framework for a subject, but more importantly, to help the subject come alive
for you, capturing your imagination and inspiring you to venture beyond your
comfort zone.
I have worn many hats at Yavapai College. I began here in 1998 as an adjunct
instructor, then was hired as a full time instructor in the
Career Skills Program
in 2000. Last year I was asked to join YC's
Technology Enhanced Learning Services
Department as the Instructional Technology Coordinator. I continued to
teach part-time (adjunct) in addition to my fulltime position, teaching SOC 101
and BSA 100.
In January, I accepted a position at
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University as their Instructional Support Director. In
addition to that job, I teach part-time (adjunct) for Yavapai College, with
teaching certificates in Sociology, Business, Student Development and Computer
Science.
How, you might wonder, does a person wind up with teaching certificates in such
diverse subjects? Well, I've had an interesting life and the combination of my
education, interests and work experiences has resulted in a diverse skill set.
I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology with a pre-law minor in 1995
from Western State College. During
college I worked for the Computer Services Department, where I picked up
invaluable computer skills and an appreciation for the Internet. After college,
I worked as a Legal Advocate for a Battered Women's Shelter, a Legal Secretary &
Law Office Manager, Office Manager for a newspaper office, a network
administrator for a school district, and a software consultant and trainer. In
addition, I worked for Legal Aid and was a board member for Habitat for
Humanity.
Since coming to Yavapai College, I've earned a Master's Degree in Education from
California State University and am now
in a Ph.D. program at Northcentral University.
I will prove to you in every word and action that I respect you as a member of
the Yavapai College Learning Community, and as a valued human being. In return,
I will demand the same respect be shown to each member of our class. I welcome
thoughtful questions and spirited debate, but will not tolerate bullying or
hostility.
My students tell me that I am very accessible, once they figure out how to reach
me. Email is the fastest, most reliable way to contact me. If you need to meet
with me, please make an appointment, as I no longer have a permanent office at
Yavapai College.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Regards,
Shannon
