Introduction:  Basic Body Plan--Tube Within a Tube

BEFORE CLASS:  BACKGROUND AND PREPARATION

  1. Assure you have Anatomy and Physiology prerequisites
  2. Purchase and get oriented to text and related materials
  3. Register for course and locate meeting places for lecture and lab
  4. Get colored pencils or pens for note-taking
  5. Preview text chapters, lab manual, Powerpoint presentations, web resources
  6. Print out handouts for this section of course
GOALS PRESENTATIONS ACTIVITIES
  • Launch semester with view of A and P as learning a new language as part of rite of passage in to BioMedical Sciences.

  • Introductory Self Portrait Name Tags
  • Learn basic vocabulary for orienteering around a human body

  • Establish Basic Vertebrate Body Plan as Tube within A Tube
  • Develop a safe and respectful laboratory environment
  • Lab Ethos, Cadaver Respect [link]

  • Safety Procedures Training

  • See details of wall of outer tube of body and begin viewing cadaver and dissecting fetal pig
  • Dissection of fetal pig and viewing cadaver to see basic "tube within a tube" body construction and details of body wall.  Wish List (what I wish you would know!) [Word download]
  • Start course again with view of Anatomy and Physiology in the evolutionary hierarchy of living systems

DETAILED LEARNING OBJECTIVES
  1. Launch Semester with Introduction to Class, Philosophy--incorporate students into class ethos
  2. Establish Basic Vertebrate Body Plan as fundamental structural organization of the human body
  3. Learn and use basic anatomical terminology for directions and planes of the body.  Apply to basic vertebrate body plan.
  4. See basic body construction (tube within a tube) and linings of body cavity in fetal pig and cadaver.  Identify major organs and landmarks.
  5. Analyze how Anatomy and Physiology fits into the hierarchical organization of living systems. Make clear elements of that hierarchy that students should already have learned in prerequisite courses and now be very familiar with.
  6. Examine special role of diffusion in all biological functions.  Also review feedback systems in physiology.
